Wing! Live review

Wing! feels like a studio session playing out in real time. A peek into the creative process of merging the “real life” instruments, and the one you play with your laptop. A whimsical soundscape is the base of this music, a perfect blend of the natural and electronic. Added in is the bass and drums, these being some much needed structure. An experimental delight teasing with a unique stage structure. They make the audience an outside member, peeking through the window. Rather than relying on the feedback we can offer, they simply rely on each other. They also contribute to my theory of, a bunch of nerdy guys on a stage = sick ass music.

Shut up, Charlie! @ the windmill

Shut up Charlie’s gig feels like a well rehearsed jam session you get to sit in on. While there aren’t any vocals it doesn’t feel as if it’s lacking anything. I can sometimes find myself teasing along the lines of sleep with an instrumental set as some can feel repetitive, but shut up charlie knew how to keep you refreshed musically throughout. This is truly a power trio where every member is extremely talented. But more importantly its how they work together. They know how to give and take. Finding moments to work together and let someone shine. You find yourself throughout the gig thinking “damn that was good”. They tickle your inner music nerd. And quick note to the bassist, crazy good riffs and tone.

Black Fondu at The Windmill for Independent Venue Week

Black fondu is more than a musician but an artist. Their work is a well thought out performance piece, full of emotion and feeling. The sounds showcase the skill of their production techniques. It had me wondering if they used ableton, as a canvas for their work. Experimenting with sounds to a beat, playing around with layers. The Orchestra (For Now) played The Windmill this Monday to kick off Independent Venue Week. What I found was a wonderfully deranged symphonic horror soundtrack. While having its light airy moments the music was heavy with anxiety inducing lyrics including feelings of dread. The pieces were driven by intriguing rhythms orchestrated by their extremely talented drummer. This groups feels like a bunch of band kids who’d gone wild. Having discovered there’s more to be done with classical instruments and structures. With their second single just coming out these guys are picking up speed, so I’d start tuning in now if I were you.

Empires Empires at Off The Cuff

A few weeks ago I got the pleasure of seeing Empires Empires live. Truly a refreshing and new live act. It can sometimes feel like you’re seeing different variations of the same thing in London. But this felt truly new to me, while still playing off the very old.

They’re very tight and well rehearsed and made you feel like time stopped. Where I wasn’t thinking about my cold drink freezing my hand or when I could next take a seat. But truly enjoying and taking in the music.
